Ivy Stones 1873 – 2024

Since 1873, Penn has upheld a unique tradition that symbolizes its rich history and commitment to its campus. Each graduating class has contributed to this tradition by placing an Ivy Stone on the University’s grounds, typically on one of its prominent buildings.

The inspiration for this tradition can be traced back to the class of 1873 when Penn relocated to its new West Philadelphia campus that year and inaugurated the impressive College Hall. Over time, this endearing tradition became known as Ivy Day, a name that encapsulates its essence.

With nearly 200 Ivy Day stones installed across the campus, each stone tells a story of the graduating class that contributed it, adding to the tapestry of Penn’s legacy.
